"Greetings from SoCal and
Asbury Park, NJ"
Robert Lance, BHBA Barrister President
This
is a year which will see great changes on our political landscape. A two term
incumbent President is set to leave office while there is a strong possibility
that we will elect the first woman President in our history. The upcoming year
will also see reforms to our health care system, immigration policy and locally
we will be looking at legislation affecting our lives from mass transit projects
to the revitalization of downtown Los Angeles.
As Barristers President I welcome the challenges that this year will bring. With
that, I believe we have elected a 25 person Board of Governors for the
Barristers that is reflective of our changing society. Together we have begun
plans aimed at educating both new lawyers, soon to be lawyers, and the community
that we serve.
In a nutshell, these plans include an assistance plan for victims of domestic
violence, an immigration forum, meetings for Barristers with various members of
the Bench at each of our monthly meetings, a multitude of lectures aimed at new
attorneys entering the field of entertainment law, and, finally, programs aimed
at our most important constituency--school children—including the High School
Blue Car Project and the Tolerance Through Education program.
Our goals are to enrich our community and wake up those who feel stagnation is
commonplace in our society. As a young attorney, I have been confronted with the
struggle of learning my profession, worrying about my wife and 6 year old
daughter, and trying to find time to do the things in life I swore I would never
sacrifice (my love of the New York Giants and Mets, training at the gym, and
traveling the world).
One of the goals for the Barristers this year will be to see to it that a
balance can be reached in our professional and private lives. However, I believe
we have a duty to serve our community and, as such, I promise that we will
increase our involvement in community service projects during this year.
Ours is a noble profession, and we must always remind ourselves of that when we
are busy cross-examining a difficult witness or preparing our summary judgment
opposition.
We also encourage law students to come along for the ride as they too have much
to gain from our programs and events.
This year I will invite my fellow Barristers to participate with us.
As this year begins for us, I wish to say greeting from SoCal and, for my
friends back in my neighborhood on the East Coast, Greetings from Asbury Park,
N. J.
