DEMYSTIFYING MUSIC RIGHTS
This program presents an experienced music attorney who will give a practical and valuable nuts and bolts guide on getting the rights to use music for various entertainment projects. Understanding how to clear and license music is critical for film producer clients who need songs for their movies, for internet sites streaming music online, for musical artists who want to record songs, and more. Relevant questions will be addressed, such as:

     Do you always need permission to use music? Who owns the music? The artist? The record label? The songwriter? How do you track down the rights holders? How do you negotiate license fees? Can you use a popular recording of a song? What do a “synch” license and a “master use” license cover? What are “mechanical rights”? Is it “fair use” to use only a few seconds of music? Do ASCAP and BMI publish music? Do you have to pay to use “Happy Birthday”?

SPEAKER: SUSAN RABIN is Senior Co-Chair of the Beverly Hills Bar Association Entertainment section. She serves as Special Counsel to the entertainment litigation firm of Johnson-Pham, LLP. She is experienced in drafting and negotiating the full range of entertainment transactions in film, television and music and also works as production counsel and music supervisor on feature films. She has performed consulting work at Universal Pictures. Susan has been selected a “Southern California Super Lawyer” for 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010.

Susan is an adjunct professor of entertainment law and copyright law, and has taught at West Los Angeles School of Law, Golden Gate University School of Law, University of San Francisco School of Law, San Francisco State University, and Monterey College of Law. While running her own firm, she toured internationally as a vocalist with Dan Hicks & the Hot Licks and released two albums of her own original material and jazz standards.
