Jury Selection and Experts: "The Play's The Thing"
There is nothing more important in civil trials than jury selection and challenges to the admissibility of an opponent's expert testimony.Unfortunately, these are often the facets of trial practice least considered, and perhaps least well understood by even seasoned courtroom advocates. They find the notion of talking with lay prospective jurors about their experiences, feelings and beliefs somehow terrifying. And they often leave on the table various avenues of attack that could result in the limitation or exclusion of unfavorable expert opinions. It need not be so with a little preparation and a game plan. Join veteran defense trial lawyer Kevin Mayer as he explores the basic fundamentals of jury selection and the "gates of admissibility" for expert testimony in contemporary civil litigation.

Kevin C. Mayer is a partner and accomplished trial attorney with deep experience advocating on behalf of clients in a wide variety of complex product liability, toxic tort, OSHA, and mass tort actions. He counsels clients facing regulatory enforcement at both the state and federal level. He has litigated and tried cases in multiple federal, state, territorial and tribal courts, as well as before government agencies and administrative bodies. He is counsel-of-record in some of the most important appellate decisions assisting the defense in tort litigation over the past 25 years.

Kevin has particular experience addressing complex scientific, medical, and technical issues, and preparing and examining expert witnesses in both deposition and trial settings for personal injury, wrongful death, and regulatory litigation.

Kevin is a Fellow of The Litigation Counsel of America, the Trial Lawyers' Honor Society, and a much-sought speaker and author on litigation and trial practice.
